The corporation is on going.  It can hold the property longer than individuals can.  Currently trustees are listed as the owners of the property and as they change the deed must be rewritten.  Many Illinois family farms are held "corporately" in family trusts so that there is no transfer of ownership when children take over from parents.

The members or employees of a corporation have less personal liability when acting on behalf of a corporation.

Donations to a Non-profit Corporation are tax deductible.

The Finance Committee of IYM recommends incorporating as a non-profit corporation. There is a requirement to file initial paperwork to create the corporation and to annually renew the corporation and state the names of the corporate officers.  Please contact any member of IYM Finance Committee with questions.

Historic Detective Work Needed

It has come to the attention of Finance Committee that there were a number of monthly meetings in Blue River Quarter that have long ago been laid down, who used to have cemeteries and, presumably, meetinghouses and land.  The monthly meetings were located in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Nebraska.  It is not clear from the minutes reviewed just what happened to this property and the cemetery responsibilities.  It may be possible that the Yearly Meeting holds the legal title to these properties.  Do we have a researcher in our midst that would like to find out more for us?  Please contact Cathy Garra if you're interested at 847/864-3218 or Peter Lasersohn at 217/384-9591 to see what has been discovered so far.

Consider a Gift to IYM

Illinois Yearly Meeting welcomes financial contributions of all sizes from individuals.  Our Site Fund covers routine repairs and upkeep.  It is also challenged with the responsibility of covering the repair costs for the termite damage to our historic meetinghouse at McNabb.  This is anticipated to cost tens of thousands of dollars.  A gift to the General Fund will augment next year's operating budget for IYM.  Larger unrestricted gifts to our new Special Gifts Fund, where money is spent over time or for special needs of the yearly meeting.

Roger Laughlin, treasurer, can accept checks or gifts of securities, such as stocks or mutual funds.  Call him for "how to" help on the transfer of a gift of securities.  Roger's address is on the "title page" of our Minute Book and you can reach him at 847/577-9496.  For the long term, new planned giving tools, administered by Friends Fiduciary Corporation, can benefit both the donor and IYM with lifetime income, tax advantages and an eventual gift to the yearly meeting.  Also over the long term, the yearly meeting can benefit from Friends' thoughtful estate planning.  Cathy Garra, clerk of Finance Committee, can help you learn more about these choices.  She can be called at 847/864-3218.
