Front Porch
"There's a big porch on the Meeting house of Mid-Coast Meeting in
Damariscotta ME and also a big porch on the Meeting house in
McNabb IL. They have chairs and rockers and you can just sit there
for a bit and soon enough people will come by with conversation to
listen to or join in on. The tone changes as people arrive or leave
for Meeting for Worship as opposed to say arriving for a committee
meeting or a potluck. The depth of what's shared shifts and
whether a conversation is one that can be joined is obvious by
sounds and eye contact. One hears stories, laughter, tears, and
the whole parade of characters of a meeting can be glimpsed just
by sitting on that porch and taking it in. It's a very round sense of
our lives that can be seen this way."
