Called Meeting for Peace

Sunday, February 28, 2010, 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.

Whittier Room

Swarthmore Friends Meeting invites all interested individuals to join us in Whittier Room on Sunday, February 28, at 11:45 a.m. for an hour-long Called Meeting for Peace.  The point of our Called Meeting is to supplement our day-to-day intellectual musings on war, violence, and trauma with collective meditative reflection.  This event will the take the form of what is known as Quaker "worship sharing," in which spoken, heart-felt insights are shared from a central focus of spiritual meditation.  We invite you to experience how gathering with others in this way enriches your thinking in a way that differs from individual reading or from secular political debate.  With regard to specific social concerns, the theme "Found in Translation" invites us to reflect in a worshipful state on whether or how we might, for example, forge interfaith connections (e.g. Christian-Muslim); grapple with the notion of a defensible U.S. military role in Afghanistan or in Haiti; combat gun violence through healing and compassion; and find peace-related meaning in the everyday.

Sandwiches and light refreshments will be available in our Rushmore Room from 11:15 a.m.  For those new to Quakerism, a Seeker's session at 11:30 a.m. will be devoted to the Quaker Peace Testimony downstairs, in our library.

Reservations are not required.  Optional reservations (helpful for planning refreshments) may be made by contacting the Meeting Office, [email protected] or (610) 328-8699.
