Cooking for the Homeless says “THANK YOU!”

Feeding the Homeless Working Group is an outreach activity done through Swarthmore Monthly Meeting's Peace and Social Concerns Committee. It was started about 18 years ago by several members of Swarthmore Monthly Meeting, Chester Meeting, and others. Originally food was distributed near the 69th Street Terminal.  Now meals are served at a shelter on the 69th Street-West Philadelphia border.  Currently we are serving about 150 people on the third Saturday night of each month.  It takes many hands to pull this off each month --shopping, meal preparation, and transporting/serving .  Shopping for supplies and food takes place on the Thursday and Friday before, meal preparation happens on Saturday morning starting at 9:30 a.m.  The meal is transported to the shelter and served starting at 5:45 p.m., typically returning at 8:00 p.m. Currently two members purchase the food and maintain financial records. We have several longtime supporters and helpers. Interested members/attenders can sign up to help cook for a particular date on sheets posted on the bulletin board in the hallway by the kitchen.
