Keith and Andrea Knox, who is working with Keith on the details, suggest that proceeds be donated this year to Partners in Health in Haiti. Keith Calmes: 2011 Guitar Recital Benefited Japan

 Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 4:00 p.m. in Whittier Room

Guitarist Keith Calmes gave a recital to benefit Japanese relief after the Earthquake and nuclear disaster -- through the Japanese Red Cross. It was held in Whittier Room May 14, 2011, at 4:00 p.m.  Keith offered this recital of classical, country, jazz, and pop music as a gift to the Meeting.  Keith's student, Dean Maola performed the first set. A Columbian folk song, El Grillo, was performed along with Dean's brother, Graham Maola on bongos, and Dean's grandfather, Vince Maola on clarinet. Dean also perfomred solo pieces by Heitor Villa-Lobos, J.S. Bach, and Metallica.  Keith Calmes performed several pieces that were written for him by Ruben Delgado, Maximo Diego Pujol, and Chiel Meijering.  In the vein of the benefit, Keith and Dean performed the Japanese duet, Sukiyaki Song, "I look up as I Walk."  Donations were collected after the performance. 

Keith Calmes is a graduate of the Julliard School of Music and has performed at venues as varied as Carnegie Hall and the Philly Fringe Festival.  He teaches guitar at Wall High School and Ocean County College in New Jersey.  Dean Maola, a student at Strath Haven Middle School, has studied with Keith for six years.

A dessert reception with an opportunity to chat with Keith and Dean followed the performance.  

 

Keith Calmes: 2010 Guitar Recital Benefited Haiti

 Saturday, May 15, 2010, 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., in Whittier Room

Guitarist Keith Calmes gave a recital to benefit Haiti relief in Whittier Room on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. Keith has offered this recital as a gift to the Meeting.  Keith's student, Dean Maola, of Providence Meeting  also performed.  Donations collected after the performance were distributed to Haiti Partners and Heads Together Haiti.  Julian Brelsford, who spoke to us April 9, about his work in Haiti, will handle the distribution.
