This film shows the life of Jesus, simple and unadorned, according to the Gospel of Matthew. Director Pier Paolo Pasolilni, a Marxist filmmaker, was invited by the Catholic Church to a conference on film, Put up in a monastery during the conference, he had only the Bible to read. After reading Matthew's Gospel, he decided to make this classic film.
