Northampton Friends Meeting

Statement in Support of the Moslem Community

As the Quaker meeting in Northampton, we have been moved by the outpouring of mutual support and solidarity as Americans and the world community have drawn together in response the disaster on September 11, 2001. We have been concerned to hear about attacks on Muslims and mosques in other parts of the country which have led to apprehension among the local Islamic community. We are pleased that President Bush has called on Americans to show respect for their Muslim neighbors and not blame them for the deadly terrorist acts that rocked the country.

It is ironic that many of the Muslims in our area come from war-torn Bosnia where they have already suffered persecution. Many others are long-established, contributing members of our community, with a rich cultural and religious tradition. They, like the rest of us, are horrified by the terrorism.

One of the great things about America is that we respect one another's varied background. We encourage the Valley community to join us in being especially tender toward our Muslim neighbors who are feeling vulnerable at this time.
