[The Lord of Silence: index] [next] [Italian]

23    Proper Listening

Good and wise it is
to stand in silence
before the Lord.
It is not He
who does not know
what weighs you down
what you need or what prompts you
to grow
in spiritual stature
but you.
So then it is as well
for one who believes
to stand in unrelenting
proper listening
to His will,
to His wisdom;
to make requests, yes,
but for holy matters which rise up
with the wings of prayer
right up to Heaven
without being wasted
in vanity.

Susello di Ghiffa, 10 VIII 1991

May we look upon our treasures, the furniture of our houses, and our garments, and try whether the seeds of war have nourishment in these our possessions.

John Woolman, Journal.
