[The Lord of Silence: index] [next] [Italian]

11    Silence and Reality

Silence is a remedy against noise, useless chatter, mental confusion, heated and dangerous discussions, nervous breakdown.

Silence is also an effective means for exploring behind the masks of human lies, factions, and religions that proclaim excellent things and do not do them.

And again: silence is an instrument for probing inside values to check whether they are genuine, or conceal falsehood and emptiness.

Silence is the litmus paper that reacts to lies and indicates the degree of truth in our impulses, thoughts, and plans -- and naturally that of others as well.

It is a signpost that shows the way of a deep reality that exists beyond us, unknown by and hidden by its opposite, hubbub.

Milan, 15 I 1988

Moreover when the Lord sent me forth into the world, he forbade me to put off my hat to any, high or low.

Be patterns, be examples in all countries, places, islands, nations, wherever you come, that your carriage and life may preach among all sorts of people, and to them; and you will come to walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in every one.

George Fox, Journal.
