[The Lord of Silence: general index]

19    Eloquent Silence

Some speak ... and don't say anything.
Some are silent ... because they have nothing to say.
Some are silent ... to listen.
Some are silent ... so as not to tell the truth.
Some are silent ... because they are afraid.
Some are silent ... because they are proud.
Some are silent ... and in their way eloquent

God is the most eloquent of all who are silent.

It is in vain to speak against the vain words that fill the world. It is useful to speak words that come from the heart. It is priceless to read the Word of God in acts of love.

God who speaks to the human spirit in the silence does not have linguistic boundaries, because the language of the spirit is universal. Whoever listens to this wordless God, tuned in on the wavelength of the spirit through faith, inspiration and contemplation, recognises that God emits continuous messages.

Whoever has his spiritual radio blocked by his own pride accuses the spirit of not broadcasting; whoever has elevated his own ego to the throne of God has completely isolated himself by cutting all ties that bind him to the fountains of life and truth. Humanity, once isolated, suffers in its empty spiritual silence and bewails its loss of communication.

Many people who are tired of being separated from eternal values and misled by transitory ones are now seeking to reconnect the wires cut by false modern teachers. Looking around among the discarded values they find an instrument which is ancient, humble and strong, and without ornaments, music, images, ritual or heady perfumes. It is the simple silence of those who listen to themselves, to others, and to God. Thus they return to living in the dynamic wave of life beyond pain, fear, and death.

The God of Silence has spoken to them in accents that are freeing, eternal and sublime.
