Finding Quaker Worship in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area
Each week on Sunday morning, Quakers in the Washington Area gather for worship at some fifteen locations. The sites for worship include nine Monthly Meetings, three Preparative Meeting, three Worships Groups.
While some of these Friends Meetings are several centuries old, most were
established in this century, some only within the last decade. In
addition to the nine Monthly Meetings, in the Washington Area there are three
Preparative Meetings (Fredericksburg, Friendship, Takoma Park) and three
worship groups (at Friends House, Howard County/Columbia and Seneca Valley).
These have all been formed in the last decade and exist under the care of a
Monthly Meeting. What distinguishes the Preparative Meetings from the
worship groups, is these Meetings conduct their own business in
anticipation of becoming regular a monthly meetings in the future. The worship
groups, on the other hand, have come together very recently, thus far
gathering only for the purpose of worship
In addition to Sunday worship, two
meetings hold mid-week Meetings for Worship.
Friends Meeting of Washington
holds worship on Wednesdays, at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting House Parlor.
Sandy Spring Friends Meeting
holds Meeting for Worship on Thursdays at 7:30pm. A third mid-week meeting is
the Friends in
Christ Bible Fellowship which occurs each Wednesday evening between 7:30-9
PM at Hyattsville Elementary School, 5311 43rd Avenue in Hyattsville,
Maryland.
