IYM's Young Friends, Youth Oversight, and Peace Resources Committees invite you to
join us for a Yearly Meeting workshop and discussion for Young Friends
Thursday morning, July 31st, 10:00
NO CHILD LEFT UNRECRUITED
J.E. McNeil, Executive Director Center on Conscience & War Washington, DC
In this workshop, J.E. will lead high school and middle school Friends through
activities about conscientious objection, military service, and what we believe about war.
- How does what I believe about war affect the way I live?
- Are there times when war is necessary?
- Would I help others who are at war even if I'm not fighting myself?
- What's a conscientious objector?
- What if I decide to be a CO?
- The principal of my high school told us we all have to register with Selective Service so I have to, right?
- Does my high school have to give my home address and phone number to military recruiters?
- Recruiters have a right to be at my school - it's the law - so what can I do about it?
- There's no draft now so why should I worry about any of this? Why is it important to think about these things now?
- How is war between nations different from other kinds of violence, like gang warfare? Could a gang member be a CO? Could a CO be in ROTC? Or on the hockey team?
- Does the draft mean "women, too"?
J. E. McNeil has been a practicing attorney for twenty years and has represented
war tax resistors, demonstrators, and GIs who are COs.
