Sam Merrill to Activists

Friends -- When we visited our legislators during Quaker Lobby Day last Monday, we learned that they are getting bombarded with mean-spirited and angry emails and phone calls from groups demanding "No new taxes!" So they need to hear from the other side.

Please call or email your legislators now and tell them something like this:

"I strongly support measures that will increase state revenue. The costs—measured in reduced opportunities and increased suffering--of using only reductions in state services to fill the hole created by reduced revenue are more than we can afford. For this reason, I also support amending I-960 as provided for in SB 6130 to make responsible revenue increases possible."

Note: SB 6130 was amended before it passed the House Wednesday night on a 51-47 vote, and now needs to be passed by the Senate, as amended. Please ask your Senator to support the amended version of SB 6130.

If your representative voted for the bill, you could send a note of thanks ( http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=6130&year=2009  and click on Roll Call to see how the House vote went).

"I realize raising new revenue—even when it is needed for vital services such as health care, education, and childcare—is controversial; so, I promise to publicly support you with letters to the editor when you come out in support of proposals to raise revenue for needed state services. In short, we've got your back!"

Your own words are even better. Thank you very much. Revenue makes everything else possible.

Contact information is available at http://leg.wa.gov and you can call the LEGISLATIVE HOTLINE: 1-800-562-6000 to leave a message.
