Who is invited to participate? Friends and others interested in issues and concerns raised about globalization. (Participation limited to the first 50 registrants.)

Jack Powelson is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Colorado. He has taught and researched in economic history and economic development. He has lectured in universities and acted as economic advisor to governments in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. His principal books are Centuries of Economic Endeavor and The Moral Economy, which describe how the present world economy has come about and what it might look like in the future. In addition, he is the author of three "Quakerbacks:" Facing Social Revolution, Dialogue with Friends, and Seeking Truth Together. Jack belongs to the Boulder (Colorado) Meeting of Friends. Carol Blotter is a principal in The Prism Group, a private consultancy, specializing in the development of sales and marketing strategies for the computer software industry. For 24 years, she worked for a major international computer services company, leaving it as Vice President of Strategic Alliances to devote herself to fulltime consulting. Carol has designed and led workshops where every individual feels comfortable contributing and where those contributions are considered thoughtfully in exploring solutions. Carol belongs to Ann Arbor (Michigan) Meeting of Friends.

Suggested reading: Jack Powelson recommends Commanding Heights: The Battle for the World Economy by David Yergen and Joseph Stanislaw. In simple, lay language, this book shows how the world economy evolved during the twentieth century, setting the stage for further globalization in the twenty-first. But come even if you do not have time to read the book. The film based on this book was shown earlier this year on PBS and will be shown again at this conference. The book is widely available through bookstores, and the book and three-part video are both available from Station WGBH Boston Video at 1-800-949-8760.

ABOUT QUAKER HILL CONFERENCE CENTER

Quaker Hill Conference Center is a small independent conference and retreat center affiliated with Friends in Indiana and southwestern Ohio. Located at Richmond in east central Indiana near the Ohio state line, it is easily accessible from Interstate 70 (from the east or west) and from Indiana 27 (from the north or south). The Dayton, Ohio, airport is 45 miles to the east, and the Indianapolis airport is 75 miles to the west of Richmond.

Simple and affordable overnight accommodations are available for up to 50 guests at Quaker Hill. For those needing or desiring full-service commercial accommodations, there are several motels within a 2-5 mile driving distance. All meals for this conference will be served in the dining room at Quaker Hill.
