Hospitality Committee Job Description
Purpose
The purpose of the Hospitality Committee is to help foster and promote a friendly, welcoming, and caring community within our Meeting and to reach out to anyone interested in our Meeting.
Responsibilities
In summary, we are called upon to:
- Reflect on how our Meeting can best greet and welcome visitors and newcomers, and then lead by example and encourage everyone in Meeting to carry out that task.
- Coordinate events according the needs of the Meeting (including seasonal locavore potlucks, the First Day after-Thanksgiving meal, and the December holiday event). This may mean:
- Plan and solicit food, provide beverages and utensils, set up, decorate, and cleanup.
- Communicate with other committees sharing responsibility for these tasks to ensure their completion.
- Reflect on the needs of the Meeting and initiate community-building meals or groups, such as Friendly Sevens, as appropriate.
In order to achieve these goals, the Hospitality Committee works with other committees on various activities and events including but not limited to the list below. We collaborate with:
- Care of the Meeting Committee
- Plan and arrange events for welcoming new members
- Loaves and Fishes Committee
- Coordinate the potlucks held after the Meeting for Worship, such as the seasonal locavore potlucks and the First Day after-Thanksgiving potluck
- Coordinate tea and coffee service for the December holiday event and other potlucks or receptions that are not held after Meeting for Worship or at the regular Strawberry Creek location
- Mutual Care Committee
- Help with receptions for weddings and farewells
- Coordinate welcome receptions for new babies and new children in the community
- Help provide for special needs in the community such as visitation, communication with absent Friends, meals and arrangements for special care.
- Peace, Earthcare, and Social Witness Committee
- Coordinate seasonal locavore potlucks
- Worship and Ministry Committee
- Coordinate a summer outdoor Meeting for Worship
- Help with receptions for Memorial Meetings
- Coordinate providing worship sharing queries for Friendly Sevens.
Term & Duration:
1 year, June 1 to May 31
The term of membership on the committee is one year; however, since continuity is important, it is anticipated that most members will serve for 2 years.
Nature and Frequency of Activities
The committee generally meets once a month. If needed, it can meet more frequently.
Mandatory & Desirable Qualifications
The committee consists of up to 7 members and/or attenders of the Strawberry Creek Meeting. While it is helpful to have some members experienced in committee work and Quaker process on the committee, no experience is necessary. Ideally the clerk will be a present or former committee member.
Reporting
The committee reads and responds to Advices and Queries as directed by Worship and Ministry Committee and presents a response to Meeting for Business.
