How do I stop getting so much spam from Yahoo!?
- Login to http://www.yahoo.com/ using your Yahoo! username and password
- On the right-hand side of the page, it should say, "Hi [firstname]" with the first name you entered when you set up your account. Click on that name.
- It will probably ask you to confirm your password before taking you to your account information.
- There is a box entitled, "Yahoo! ID Card." The first section in that box is title "Member Information". It is divided into subsections, one which shows all the emails addresses you have associated with your account. At the bottom of this section is a link to "Edit your marketing preferences." Click that.
- There are different categories of spam and you'll have to look at each individually:
- There is a box entitled "Special offers and marketing communications from Yahoo!". Under that heading is a checkbox list of spam categories. Yahoo! will send you advertorial emails (aka spam) under any of the categories that are marked. There is a link at the bottom of the list, "Clear All," that will uncheck all of the boxes.
- There is a box entitled "Special offers from selected third parties delivered by Yahoo!" This has one checkbox under the heading, which says "Yahoo! Delivers". If you would like this, make sure it is checked. If not, uncheck it.
- The next box is entitled "How may we contact you?" The options are email, you can choose one of the email addresses Yahoo! has in your account; U.S. mail, this option is deactivated if Yahoo! doesn't have your address; phone, this is deactivate if Yahoo! doesn't have a phone number for you; and SMS, which is text messages on a cell phone.
Click "Save Changes" before leaving this page.
- At the very top of the screen, there are links to "Subscriptions" and "Alerts". The subscriptions page has a list of newsletters from Yahoo! that you can subscribe to or unsubscribe from on this page. Be sure to save your changes.
- The "Alerts" page doesn't have any content when I click on the link, though you might have different results. If you are concerned about alerts that you're receiving or not receiving, please ask the ECAR committee for a computer buddy who can help you out with this.
