Sustainable Energy Security

The Nabucco Gas Pipeline:
A chance for the EU to push for change in Turkmenistan
The report urges the EU to make hydrocarbon revenue management a priority in its relations with Turkmenistan. It should do this by seeking to engage the Turkmen government in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), a scheme which addresses resource revenue management issues and provides protected space for independent civil society groups to operate.

EU Security of Supply Project – The Nabucco and Trans-Sahara Gas Pipelines
The EU Security of Supply Project will focus on energy policy at European and Member State level and seeks to engage Quakers in political dialogue with representatives and policy makers. This project will explore whether the EU’s approach to energy security as manifested in the proposed Nabucco and Trans-Sahara gas pipelines, is consistent with its approach to human rights, development and conflict prevention.

EU Sustainable Consumption and Production Project
The EU Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) Project will explore the implications of SCP policy for the transport, housing and food sectors. It will evaluate SCP policy as a whole with reference to the Quaker testimonies.

Living Witness Project Europe
Living Witness Project Europe (LWPE) will focus on individual and meeting level changes to lifestyle and energy consumption behaviour. Laurie Michaelis who leads LWP-UK will run workshops at Meetings on the continent, encouraging Friends to start their own groups to build the community necessary to establish lasting behavioural change. LWPE aims to build a pan-European community of Friends dedicated to radically reducing the size of their environmental footprint.

Transforming Impasse (Quaker Business Method Project)
The way through conflict with Quaker listening processes: The Quaker Business Method Project will result in a research paper aimed at Quakers and non-Quakers interested in political organising and effective group decision-making. The paper will assess the potential for application of Quaker Business Method and other Quaker practices in non-Quaker environments, such as activist groups.

Environmental Ethical Fact-sheets
The environmental ethical fact-sheets look to address the dilemmas of ordinary Quakers in Europe around everyday queries. They will aim to condense difficult questions into easily accessible information that will be able to guide QCEA into policy recommendations. The fact-sheets will cover a diverse range of subjects from meat consumption through to air-travel.

Where does Europe's Imported Energy come from?
The EU imports 54% of its energy needs. This is set to rise to 67% by 2030. Europe imports 84% of its oil. By 2030 this is projected to rise to 95%.
