Briefing Papers on the EU and External Trade

Quaker interest in issues affecting developing countries stems from our traditional concerns with economic justice, reconciliation, and the right sharing of world resources. Quakers are involved in projects on the ground all over the world, offering both administration and support in both human and physical terms.

At QCEA our focus is on the relationship between the European Union (EU) and developing countries.

If you have any questions relating to this programme, please contact QCEA

EU Consultation on Energy and a European Strategy for Sustainable, Competitive and Secure Energy

The European Commission has published a Green Paper on Energy which can be accessed at: http://ec.europa.eu/energy/green-paper-energy/index_en.htm

This document sets out the issues the European Union faces with regard to energy supply security and the technical, technological, environmental and external policy issues arising from this.

This is an important issue not only for the European Union but for the world as a whole. It is therefore important to contribute to the consultation to ensure that some of these issues are taken on board more fully in the white paper which will be issued after the consultation. The closing date for comment is 24 September 2006. We urge you to participate.

QCEA has been disappointed by some of the content of the Green Paper and most importantly by the lack of reference to global solidarity and to the potential for conflict arising from competition for energy resources. We have posted a response on the website for the consultation and this is reproduced here PDF(94kb).

You can access the on-line consultation through the same link as the Green Paper http://ec.europa.eu/energy/green-paper-energy/index_en.htm. The consultation takes the form of an on-line questionnaire with limited space for additional comments. QCEA was unable to post all the comments we wanted to make. The comments we could not make are highlighted in italics and a reddish colour. We have submitted these by e-mail to the contact given on the consultation website and directly by post to the Commissioners for Energy and for Communication.

Briefing Papers on the EU and External Trade
QCEA has produced a collection of briefing papers on aspects of the EU’s external trade relations. They attempt to tackle the basic characteristics of EU trade policy and avoid focusing on areas that are too time sensitive.

More time sensitive commentary and news on EU trade issues can be found in Around Europe.
