Annual Committee Reports - Presented April 2010 |
Building Committe
2009 saw the completion of our new handicap-accessible bathroom upstairs in our meetinghouse. Included in the project was the installation of a hot water heater in the downstairs bathroom which serves both bathrooms. The timer on the heater was also connected to the furnace which provides for an automatic weekly start-up. We are very grateful to all those who contributed time, energy and money toward this project. Everyone seems happy with the results. Our meeting received notice last month that NYYM Advancement Committee has recommended that $2200 from the Brinkerhoff Fund be sent to our meeting to help with our bathroom construction expenses. We have used money from one of our memorial funds to date.
In October the Building Committee began discussion of replacing the outside front steps to our Meetinghouse. We have presented options to Monthly Meeting for Business twice, but no decision has yet been made as to the construction material to be used. Research is ongoing. The committee also discussed plans to paint the ramp and east side of the Meetinghouse this spring and early summer.
We held our annual Meetinghouse Clean-up Day in May of 2009.

Finance Commitee
The Finance Committee met on February 12, 2010 to discuss the finances of our meeting and draw up a proposed budget for the coming year (2010).
A summary of our activity is as follows:
At the end of 2009 our cash deficit was $490. Our cash disbursements totaled $38,907. Our proposed budget for 2010 was $39,645, including a $500 increase in Pastor’s salary. Our meeting did make a major expenditure to construct a new bathroom in 2009, but this did not negatively impact our budget because the funds came primarily from a memorial fund.
On February 21, 2010 the proposed budget was presented to Monthly Meeting for Business. The Finance Committee’s report at this meeting included the usual comprehensive year end report that our treasurer prepares each year, as well as a new, simplified budget report prepared by the committee. The proposed 2010 budget was accepted by Monthly Meeting for Business, as was the treasurer‘s comprehensive year end report
.
,Respectfully submitted,
Claire Howard, clerk

Library Report
The library continues to offer a number of books in many areas. Circulation is minimal—nine books were signed out in 2010. Dee has catalogued a few new titles this year from the Mosher Fund and from donations. Next year we plan to cull a few books that are outdated or duplicated so that we can find space for new books of interest.

Outreach Committee
Members: Ruth Bradley (Clerk), David Connelly, Anne Dalton, Hannah Richter, Paul Simkin
The Outreach Committee met three times since the last annual meeting.
Actions taken include:
- hanging a bulletin board in the downstairs social room for our brochures and other materials
- placing information about PR Meeting in church listings in a local paper, Prime Times
- with the help of our web-master (s) added a monthly calendar items to our web-site so that it is a source of current information for our community as well as visitors to the site
- continuation of press releases for public events and using the regional email list to invite area Quaker meetings to events of interest
- brochures concerning the membership process were ordered
- support for the knitting-in of newcomers through small group opportunities such as the Friendly Suppers and brunches for the Young Adult Friends and their families.
Things that are under consideration for 2010 include
- consideration of our offerings for children and youth in dialogue with the Youth Committee and M&C
- outreach to our college students and young adults: sending them PRISM if they want it; finding other ways to be a support to them; clarifying membership question for associate members
- organizing an event about Quakerism that is open to the public
- support for another “Intro to Quakerism” adult ed. experience for newcomers to the meeting
- having a time ( a soup and sharing?) to address questions and issues about membership (with M&C?) with regular attender
Other issues to keep on the back-burner until willing leadership emerges:
- programs for children and youth in the Southern Cayuga School District – perhaps the AVP program for middle and high school Help Increase the Peace “HIP”
- campus outreach to Wells College

PRISM Report
This year the PRISM Committee reorganized with the following people taking turns as editors: Larry Buffam, Stephanie Nelson, Suzanne O’Hara, and Jane Simkin. Multiple editors allow the work to be shared and a greater variety of material to be included. As before, Scott Heinekamp copies the issues, and Marylou Charles addresses and distributes them. Suzanne O’Hara and Jackie Dickinson obtained an email address, pr.prism@gmail.com , making it convenient to submit information. The committee has encouraged electronic delivery to save on postage and reduce paper use. Feedback on the PRISM has been positive.

Social Committee
The Social Committee was responsible for the usual Family Night Suppers the last Saturday of the month from September to April. It was our intent to plan a variety of programs in order to appeal to attenders and members of all ages as well as provide outreach to the wider community.
The following programs were scheduled:
September- David Connelly presented on his research of Thomas Mott Osborne
October – Halloween Carnival – the Youth Committee revitalized the Halloween Carnival after a 6 year hiatus. The social committee assisted with the food aspect of the carnival and the making of pizzas to sell as a fund raiser for UNICEF .
November – International Night – All were encouraged to bring an international dish to pass and Caroline Burch shared slides and treasures from her recent trip to China.
January – Cathy Mullarney and her mother shared slides of their trip to the Grand Canyon.
February – Friendly Suppers with meals in member’s homes
March – Bruce Berggren-Thomas presented on “The Joy of Plain Sects” – A history of the Amish and Mennonites in the United States. Several guests joined us due to a great publicity effort. The clever title and topic encouraged the newspaper to cover the event as well
.
April – No program, just an evening of socializing and eating with friends.
Monthly coffee hours were provided on the second Sundays with continued enjoyment. Many people volunteered to bake delicious treats to entice us to further socialize.
The annual Christmas finger food supper is always a big success! A dinner was coordinated for the Otis family following the death of Sally’s father, Bob Doremus. The Wider Parish Lenten Service held one of its services at the Meeting House and the social committee provided a multitude of soup and cheese and crackers for the 40-50 people in attendance. The Meeting hosted ~20 Peace marchers for the night, providing a potluck supper, lodging and breakfast at the end of March.
